BIOGRAPHY

• Ήταν Αμερικανός τραγουδιστής, τραγουδοποιός και παραγωγός. Στο ξεκίνημα της καριέρας του, ήταν περιζήτητος για την βελούδινη φωνή του, και πολλοί μεγάλοι καλλιτέχνες τον επέλεξαν για να τους κάνει φωνητικά σε τραγούδια τους. Τέτοιοι ήταν οι: Judy Collins, Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Ben E. King, και Donna Summer.
• Αργότερα γνώρισε επιτυχία ως ο βασικός τραγουδιστής του συγκροτήματος Change. Όταν εγκατέλειψε το γκρουπ το 1981, κυκλοφόρησε το ντεμπούτο σόλο άλμπουμ του με τίτλο Never Too Much.
• Επιτυχίες του είναι τα: “Never Too Much”, “Here and Now”, “Any Love”, “Power of Love/Love Power”, “I Can Make It Better”, “For You to Love” κ.α. Γνωστά και τα ντουέτα του “The Closer I Get to You” με την Beyoncé, “Endless Love” με την Mariah Carey και “The Best Things in Life Are Free” με την Janet Jackson.
• Ο Vandross έχει πουλήσει πάνω από 35 εκατομμύρια δίσκους παγκοσμίως, και έχει λάβει 8 βραβεία Grammy. Κυκλοφόρησε 13 studio albums, 59 singles. 8 albums του έγιναν No.1 στη λίστα με τα R&B albums στις ΗΠΑ. 7 τραγούδια του έγιναν No.1 στην αντίστοιχη λίστα των singles.
• O πατέρας του λεγόταν επίσης Luther Vandross και ήταν επίσης τραγουδιστής. Το βασικό του επάγγελμα όμως ήταν ταπετσιέρης. Πέθανε όταν ο μικρός Luther ήταν 8 ετών. Αρκετά χρόνια μετά, ο Luther έγραψε το τραγούδι Dancing with my father το οποίο αφιέρωσε στον πατέρα του.
• Ο Luther δεν κληρονόμησε την κλίση στη μουσική από τον πατέρα του, αλλά και τον Διαβήτη και την υπέρταση, που του προκάλεσαν έμφραγμα το 2003. Έμεινε σε κώμα για δυο μήνες, ενώ όταν ξύπνησε, δε μπορούσε πλέον να μιλήσει ή να τραγουδήσει με ευκολία, ενώ καθηλώθηκε σε αναπηρική καρέκλα. Την επόμενη χρονιά κέρδισε το βραβείο Grammy καλύτερου τραγουδιού για το Dancing With My Father, το οποίο παρέλαβε η μητέρα του. Πέθανε την 1η Ιουλίου 2005 σε ηλικία 54 ετών.
• Ο Luther Vandross δεν παντρεύτηκε ποτέ, ούτε απέκτησε παιδιά. Φήμες που τον ήθελαν ομοφυλόφιλο δεν επιβεβαιώθηκαν, ούτε διαψεύστηκαν ποτέ. Πέθανε την 1η Ιουλίου 2005.
• Όπως όλοι οι σπουδαίοι καλλιτέχνες έτσι κι αυτός απέκτησε το δικό του αστέρι στη Λεωφόρο της Δόξας του Hollywood. Εκπροσωπώντας τον αείμνηστο τραγουδιστή, συνθέτη και παραγωγό, η ανιψιά του Seveda Williams και οι τραγουδιστές Alfonso ‘Fonzi’ Thorton, Niles Rodgers, Marcus Miller αλλά και ο παραγωγός Clive Davis παρευρέθηκαν στην τελετή και παρέλαβαν το “Αστέρι”, το οποίο είναι το 2.526ο στη Λεωφόρο της Δόξας.
